Setting up Element

Nothing to host, just the client to install and point at the Conduit homeserver from its own guide.

  1. 1

    Install the app

Element Desktop is available from element.io for Windows, macOS, and Linux (Flatpak or Snap on Linux); Element X on iOS and Android from their respective app stores. The web version at app.element.io works too without installing anything.

  2. 2

Sign in with a custom homeserver

On the sign-in screen, look for "Edit" next to the homeserver address (it defaults to matrix.org) and enter this homeserver's address instead. If it's set up with the standard .well-known delegation, just entering the server's domain name is usually enough for Element to find it automatically.

  3. 3

    Set up a recovery key

The first sign-in prompts to set up cross-signing and a recovery key for encrypted messages, worth saving somewhere safe; it's what lets message history come back after signing in on a new device.
